Meet Our Instructors

Phillip Koontz

Phillip Koontz, a former Navy SEAL and combat veteran, has taught self defense for the last 6 years. He specializes in hand to hand, knife and pistol tactics. He is the previous owner of Tactical Advantage Consulting, a live fire stress course designed to mentally and physically challenge every level of shooter.

Phillip led and instructed hundreds of day and night live fire dynamic ranges to dozens of SEAL operators. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, he maintained convoy and assault team security which contributed to mission success and resulted in dozens of captures. Phillip was the lead Breacher in real world operations including ship board search and seizure teams off the West coast of Africa, and direct action missions while serving under joint task force in Baghdad, Iraq.

Jason Marsteiner

Jason Marsteiner is the founder , and lead instructor for Colorado Mountain Man Survival and The Survival University. Jason is a wilderness survival instructor, teaching people how not to die in the backcountry. He’s a published author of "WILDERNESS SURVIVAL GUIDE - Practical Skills for the Outdoor Adventurer". If there’s ever a zombie apocalypse, he’s your man!

Dino Verones

Dino was raised in Harrisburg, PA where he grew up hunting and fishing. He joined the Army in 1988 and spent 30 years (24 as a Green Beret) there until 2018 when he retired. Upon retirement from the Army, he worked as a contractor as a Team Lead training the Iraqi Special Forces in the Kingdom of Jordan. Dino is highly skilled in Flight/Cut Knife Fighting & Weapons Retention, Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, Tang Soo Do, and Boxing.

Jason Nauert

Jason grew up in the mountains of Colorado hunting, fishing, and everything outdoors. He learned all his outdoor skills from his dad and from trial & error. What separates Jason from everyone else? He’s the military’s best kept secret! Jason is the Combat Sustainability Instructor (Austere Butcher) for various Special Forces Groups and Entities. He was approached by 10th Special Forces Group in 2014 to develop courses to change the way soldiers eat on deployments to enhance nutrition, cognitive abilities, food borne illness reduction, and faster metabolic recovery during high op-tempos missions. Jason is also an expert hunter and outdoorsmen who grew up learning what is called bushcraft today.

Reuben Rodriquez Jr.

Ruben was born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and has been enjoying the great outdoors since his youth. Time spent camping and learning outdoor skills was fun and exciting, but he didn’t realize that these fire craft, archery, and hunting skills would prepare him for a career as a survival instructor. His interest in the outdoors began with a passion for Ninjutsu at a very young age. Ninjutsu is the study of various skills used in unconventional warfare and espionage during feudal Japan. Some of those skills are what we know today as bushcraft and survival. Ninja were the scouts and spies of their time and they were at home in the outdoors. Ruben has also studied other martial arts including Aikido and MMA.
